The Fire Inspector will lead a team of approximately 10 Seasonal Firefighters assigned to the Defensible Space Inspection program in determining homeowner’s compliance with defensible space requirements defined by the County of Marin and State of California.

The Fire Inspector will be highly engaged with community members, towns and community leaders surrounding Ross Valley and Marin County Fire Departments’ Defensible Space Program. Through coaching, mentoring and developing a highly energetic inspection team they will provide oversight ensuring consistent delivery, enforcement and education of both agencies’ programs.

 

Our Highly Qualified Candidate: for the position of Fire Inspector assigned to the Defensible Space program is capable of leading and motivating a team of firefighters within established policies, plans, and guidelines. They must be able to exercise sound, independent judgment. The ideal candidate has personal and professional integrity, possesses initiative, is organized, has excellent oral and written communication skills, and is tactful. They are able to work independently under general guidance. They must be able to calmly lead their personnel through a variety of situations with a safe and successful outcome as their goal. They are capable of completing multiple tasks and projects as they are assigned and can effectively make decisions with little to no supervision. They possess the ability to train and develop fellow fire department members ensuring all actions are in alignment with department’s values. Experience with defensible space and vegetation management as it relates to preparing homes for wildfire as well as having some knowledge or training in the following areas:  S-290 Intermediate Fire Behavior, CALFIRE Defensible Space Inspector – PRC 4291, NFPA Assessing Structure Ignition Potential, NFPA FIREWISE USA Program Certificates of completion for both the California State Fire Marshall Prevention 1A and 1B, as well as Fire Investigations IA, and NFPA Hazard Mitigation Specialist are also highly desirable.
