Durham Fire Department

The current Durham Fire Department (DFD) hiring process will be used to fill over 20 departmental vacancies.  All notifications regarding employment will be made via email.

The written and physical ability testing used for hiring is scheduled for January 28-31, 2019.  Applicants should expect to spend an entire day for testing.

Applicants selected for positions will perform firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical services. This is accomplished by extinguishing fires, conducting fire rescue operations, preventing the reoccurrence of fires, maintaining and inspecting fire apparatus and equipment, conducting pre-fire plans, training on firefighting techniques, performing public relations activities, providing life support, and participating in continuing education for state certifications. Other duties include maintaining grounds and facilities, testing equipment, and performing other duties as assigned.

All applicants hired must attain NC A-EMT certification within three testing attempts (scheduled and funded by DFD while employed).

Fire recruits will learn to perform all tasks above through attending classes and participating in rigorous physical training.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide emergency medical services as a first responder; evaluate and administer drugs for cardiac, respiratory, allergic conditions and trauma incidents; maintain EMS equipment and supplies.
Maintain required certifications.
Perform fire control and rescue operations by entering burning structures, searching for victims and fire sources, extinguishing fires, operating equipment and apparatus, forcing entry into structures, locating hydrants and other sources of water, and operating hose lines.
Provide highly specialized rescue services such as swift water rescue, hazardous materials response, and technical rescue.
Participate in drills, demonstrate consistent and thorough knowledge of specialized areas, and maintain records, logs, and reports.
Maintain equipment and fire facilities by performing daily preventive maintenance, testing fire equipment, checking hydrants, and performing other duties as assigned.
This position is critical to emergency operations and will report to work in spite of or because of an emergency or disaster event.
Until graduation from the Fire Academy, fire recruits will learn to perform all tasks above through attending classes and participating in rigorous physical training.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

Certified Firefighter

-High school or equivalency
-Must have a valid driver’s license.
-North Carolina certified applicants must have current NC Certified Firefighter I and II and Hazardous Materials Responder Level I.  Out of state applicants must have a current equivalent to NC Certified Firefighter I and II and Hazardous Materials Responder Level I.  Equivalent certifications must be from an IFSAC or Pro Board accredited agency.
-All applicants must have NC EMT-B certification or must be able to attain NC EMT-B certification through reciprocity.
-Must attain NC A-EMT certification within three testing attempts (scheduled and funded by DFD while employed).
-As of 1/20/2019, applicants must have been employed as a sworn firefighter by a municipal or Department of Defense fire department for at least two consecutive years with no more than a 3-month lapse in employment as a sworn firefighter

OR

applicants must have graduated from a municipal fire academy, the Durham Technical Community College Fire Academy, or other approved fire academy within the past two years (after 1/20/2017).

(Note: government fire department/academy is defined as a city, town, or Department of Defense fire department.)

-Must have a valid driver’s license.
-Work will require knowledge that must be attained through successful completion of the Durham Technical Community College Fire Academy or a Durham Fire Department sponsored academy (scheduled and funded by DFD while employed).
-Must attain NC A-EMT certification within three testing attempts (scheduled and funded by DFD while employed).
