The City of Freeport IL is seeking a Fire Chief. Located in Northern Illinois, the City of Freeport Fire Department services approximately 13 square miles with over 25,000 residents, has 3 stations and responds to over 4500 calls annually.
The Fire Chief is responsible for planning, developing and directing Fire Department activities, including operations, emergency medical services, training and safety, professional standards, resource management and fire prevention and emergency preparedness and recovery.
Experience preparing and administering an effective annual budget and long range capital improvement plan is required. The qualified applicant will be a creative thinker and have the ability to work with limited resources. Under the direct supervision of the City Manager, the Chief will also coordinate and direct external affairs of the department with federal, state and local officials, businesses and community.
The Chief will supervise approximately 47 full-time paid staff and administrative personnel and must be able to lead, inspire, develop and empower employees, resolving conflict and promoting teamwork and communication among shifts.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and possession of Fire Officer II certification, achievement of the rank of Battalion Chief, Captain, Lieutenant or a similar rank within a department of comparable size and composition as the Freeport Fire Dept., holding such position for a minimum of 3 years. The Chief must also have served as a professional firefighter for at least 10 consecutive years.
