Location: Based out of Administrative Fire Department Offices at Fire Station #1 located at 14800 Scenic Heights Road, Eden Prairie, MN 55344

Hours:  City office hours 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., evening meetings including Fire Department meetings and City Council meetings required; schedule varies based upon business needs

Reporting Relationship: Reports to City Manager

Fire Department

The Eden Prairie Fire Department is comprised of four fire stations and a staff of 95 duty-crew firefighters and 9 full-time firefighters who protect and serve Eden Prairie residents by responding to fire calls and educating the community regarding fire safety and prevention. Safety is the top priority for the Eden Prairie Fire Department. The Department also educates businesses and residents with ongoing fire safety programs.

Position Responsibilities

The Fire Chief is responsible for the administration and operation of the fire department, including the supervision of full-time staff and ninety-five paid on-call members. This position is primarily responsible for the following areas of impact:

Provides management, supervision, training, and evaluation of all full-time, part-time, and paid on-call fire department staff; recruits and hires staff and paid on-call fire fighters; Supervises the training and professional development of employees.

Oversees the Building Division by providing direct supervision to the City’s Building Official; oversees the acquisition of new equipment, and assures department equipment needs are met. Performs strategic planning, both short-term and long-term; manages the fire inspection program.

Acts as a liaison and facilitates communication with other City departments, outside agencies, and community groups; educates community regarding fire safety and prevention.

Enforces City and department policies and procedures to ensure consistency across organization and within department.
Prepares and assures adherence to department budget.

Position Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred; EMT Certification required; Emergency Preparedness Certification required within the first year of employment.

Work Experience:  Minimum of seven years fire administration experience required; minimum of eight years professional fire experience with supervision and at least five years leading a division within a Fire Department required; at least five years managing multi-divisions preferred.

Technical Skills: Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook) required. Fire industry system knowledge preferred.

Physical Effort: Physical effort is light for the majority of work with lifting or carrying limited to 25 pounds intermittently. However field work requires the same physical exertion required for any Fire Fighter.  There is a need to make presentations, which involves public speaking in front of City leaders and the public.  Between 15% and 45% of the time there is pressure associated with a project or activity deadline.  Report preparation and writing at times requires extended use of a keyboard.  Work interruptions are frequent.

A valid driver’s license is required.

Working Conditions: Most work is split between the field and a normal office environment. Active participation in field activities, such as major events, natural or man-made disasters or events with a high public profile can come with intermittent exposure to hazardous or disagreeable working conditions. Regular driving or riding is required to attend meetings, events, and respond to emergencies. The job may involve dealing with and calming individuals who are emotionally charged over an issue.
