Anndee Huber

Anndee Huber, 16, a student firefighter with the Newcastle, Wyoming, Volunteer Fire Department, was killed May 22, 2003, when the tanker in which she was responding to a fire call left the road and rolled. Huber was transported to a local hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Huber was a 10th-grade student at Newcastle High School who joined the fire department's Explorer program in the fall of 2002, as soon as she turned 16. She was a 4.0 student, president of her class, a swimmer, and a cross-country runner. Her brother, Kevin Huber, told reporters, "Anndee was... a little wiser, a little stronger, more outgoing than most 16-year-olds were. Rather than doing the things teenagers do, she was down at the fire hall getting her training."

The firefighter who was driving the tanker was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, and homicide by vehicle. According to news reports, he had a history of alcohol problems.

Funeral services were held at the Newcastle High School Auditorium on Tuesday, May 27. A memorial is being established in Anndee Huber's name at First State Bank in Newcastle, Wyoming, to start a scholarship in her memory.
