Lisa A. FarrowVolunteer firefighter Lisa A. Farrow of the Engelhard, North Carolina, Fire & Rescue Department, collapsed at the scene of a kitchen fire on August 9, 2000, and died a short time later.
Farrow, who was 30, had responded to the early evening call, a small fire which was mostly extinguished by the homeowner. She was moving some equipment back to the fire apparatus when she collapsed. EMS assistance was on hand; Farrow was treated and transported to the nearest hospital, 50 miles away, but went into cardiac arrest soon after leaving the scene and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The medical examiner's preliminary report indicated Farrow's death was caused by acute hypoxia due to pulmonary edema. It was not believed to have been directly linked to her activity at the fire scene.
Farrow leaves two children, ages 8 and 10. She had been with the fire department for about a year, and was employed as a correctional officer at Hyde Correctional Center. She was described as a popular person in her community, and was actively involved with a state employees' association and a state correctional officers' association.
