Leadership Conference Program Highlights
The conference program includes a variety of educational sessions and great networking. Receive expert instruction on a variety of topics designed to strengthen your leadership skills—all at a great value price!
AUG 13TH Program Highlights Include:
Making Yourself Ready to Promote - This session is intended to motivate you to consider promotion. If you are not ready or do not want to promote, come share your perspective on the reasons why. If you are an officer, participate in a discussion to motivate others to step up to the challenge. Fire Chiefs want women officers so let's challenge ourselves to explore the reasons why this is not happening. Chief Cheryl Horvath
Command Presence - This interactive session will give women firefighters and officers the opportunity to learn and practice personal skills that will make them more effective leaders in any situation. Command presence is the ability to confidently take charge of any situation, regardless of the rank one holds. You will leave this session feeling energized to take on new challenges. Linda F. Willing
LION PPE Fit and Design for Female Firefighters - This interactive session, which includes lunch, will discuss what LION is doing to incorporate the voice and needs of female firefighters into its R&D and product development efforts, as well as allow the audience an opportunity to voice concerns and needs of women in the fire service.
Circle of Fire - This session is an opportunity for female firefighters to come together in Circle to talk about their own experience as leaders, members of a minority, trail blazers and firefighters in a supportive forum. Jennifer Pernfuss and Karen Simpson, a career firefighter and trained Coaches.
Preparing For The Oral Interview - Participants will explore the challenges associated with the oral interview process. In this presentation, what is apparently the single most difficult stumbling block to a successful promotion will be observed, analyzed and discussed. Captain (ret.) Jim Spell
The Walls Come Tumbling Down: Achieving Gender Equity in the Fire Service – During this session participants will discuss the legal and practical issues involved in conquering gender equity issues in the Fire Service. The presenters will examine ways to eliminate or reduce the impact of the barriers which remain, such as adequate facilities, pregnancy and childrearing. Attorney Alisa Arnoff and Fire Specialist Mary Ann Hubbard
Fire Behavior Basics and Beyond the Burns: Lessons Learned - Before we risk our lives to save lives, we need to better understand the fire environment we operate in. The first part of this presentation reviews fire behavior in relation to compartment profiling, the time/temperature curve, toxicity of fire gases and how these affect victims as well as firefighters. Next, two women firefighters suffered burns while fighting a basement fire in October 2011. Learn firsthand the specifics of the incident from construction, size up considerations, situational awareness factors and how the need to prove oneself impacted the event. Lt. Hughes will share her compelling story and the critical lessons she learned from this experience. Battalion Chief (ret.) Katherine Ridenhour and Lt. Angela Hughes
Conflict Resolution: Fast Attack Strategy for the Proactive Officer – We all want to fight fires on the job, but your job as an officer entails far more "hot" personnel issues than fire scenes. Learn a sure-fire strategy to bring up tough issues and address them effectively. Work in small groups using real scenarios to practice conflict resolution using a simple and effective method. Increase your confidence when confronting uncomfortable situations with crewmembers, peers, bosses and even family members by practicing new communication skills. Appropriate for EMS supervisors, acting/promoted officers and chief officers. Battalion Chief (ret.) Katherine Ridenhour
